How important is a mobile website? Isn’t a mobile site nothing more than a vanity project? Do I even need a website at all, my business has been around for a while. The short answers to each of these questions are: very, no, and yes…
How Important is a Mobile Website?
How important is a mobile website? Why not ask another question as well? How important are new customers for your business? Roughly a decade ago, a report was issued showing how most people browsed the web. The report found that instead of keying in an exact domain name, about 80% of people search for the website using a search engine and jump to the site that way. This shook the Web when it was released and businesses started the mad scramble towards search engine optimization.
In 2010, another report came out. It was titled the 2010 ITU report, and it transformed how people perceived the Web yet again. This time, however, the report showed that instead of accessing websites via laptops and desktop PCs, a great many people are accessing the web via mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PC. These numbers are expected to increase further, causing yet another mad dash in the way business is done on the web. Instead of targeting desktop and laptop users first and mobile devices second, now computers and laptops are soon becoming an afterthought. So that pretty much answers our next question of “Isn’t a mobile site nothing more than a vanity project? It depends entirely on your definition of vanity. If you want to keep your customers and attract new ones, then yes, it is a vanity project. But what about businesses that have been around a while? Aren’t they immune from needing a website, much less a mobile website?
Don’t Wait-Build Your Mobile Website
Let’s say you own a family-owned business. You’re on the Chamber of Commerce in your town, and everyone knows your family. You obviously don’t need a website or a mobile website, right? Wrong. Why? Well, let’s say someone is new to town. How are they going to find your business? They’re going to look for it using their Android or i-Phone. If one of your competitors has a mobile website, and you don’t, guess who is going to probably rank higher? That’s right, your competition. Over time, you can find your business dropping off more and more, forcing you into your own mad scramble to catch up with your rival businesses. You want to proactively improve your business, not scramble to keep it going.
Is a mobile site everything? Not at all, there are several keys for a business to succeed. However, without a mobile website, a business may end up being nothing more than a memory.
